The BOLT makes a powerful statement in a tiny form factor

The UDOO BOLT is the world’s most powerful maker board

UDOO is now back, with another piece of powerful hardware for maker board enthusiasts. Their latest board is the UDOO Bolt, and though it’s just arrived on Kickstarter it’s already smashed its goals! That’s no surprise though, the UDOO Bolt is looking like one of, if not the best maker board in the market. All this, despite the fact that it’s not even out yet! So, what exactly is so interesting about the UDOO BOLT, and is it worth your time?

For those of you not in the know, a maker boards are basically tiny single-board computers (think Raspberry Pi) with limited hardware or interface support. Their intention is to give programmers full access to design their own functionality. With enough programming knowledge and skill, just about anything can be made with maker boards. You could make a robot, a home theater system, an emulation console, an RC car, the sky’s the limit with maker boards.

Now that you’re somewhat on the same page, what exactly makes the UDOO BOLT special you may ask? Well, to begin with, the UDOO BOLT has an AMD Embedded V1000 SoC. It has a four core, multi-thread Zen CPU and integrated AMD Vega GPU architecture, for up to 3.6 GHz of processing power. This makes it almost twice as powerful as a Macbook Pro 13. It’s also the maker board with the world’s highest clock speed, so yeah, it’s pretty powerful.

The GPU here is now slouch either. It supports any current AAA game, HDR, Radeon FreeSync™ 2 and it can even handle video streaming in 4k resolution at 60 fps on four screens at once. There are four video ports available on the UDOO BOLT, two USB-C and two HDMI 2.0. The developers of the UDOO BOLT made the board with the intention of using it for AI, VR, AR and Computer Vision development. This is because it embeds the groundbreaking AMD SenseMI Technology for true machine intelligence.

For the hardcore makers, the UDOO BOLT also mounts an Arduino-compatible platform, complete with IOs for the CPU and the Arduino onboard. Furthermore, it features Grove connectors for easy tinkering, not to mention the keyboard scan which allows to build combo custom controllers. This may sound like odd tech mumbo jumbo to those not in the know, but trust us, it’s impressive. As if that weren’t enough, the UDOO BOLT can even run both Windows and Linux, AND it’s plug and play.

So, we’ve been raving about the little board up to this point, but what about the price? The UDOO Board actually comes in two variants, the V3 and V8. The V3 comes with the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1202B SoC, which can clock to up to 3.2GHz and comes in at $229 per unit. The V8 on the other hand is more powerful with an AMD Ryzen Embedded V1605B SoC up to 3.6 GHz for $309. There’s not even a particular rush to get one, the project’s already gone way past its funding goal, and there are still 36 days on the clock.
