Most iPhone users have used a case for their device before, though reasons for it vary. Perhaps you’re a fashionista, and you want to show people that through a flashy phone case. Maybe you want your iPhone as safe and secure as possible, so you get a case tough enough to rough through the elements. But tech startup ESTI has a different vision for an iPhone case. Instead of a nice battery pack or a stylish design, they’ve gone and slapped on an entire Android device in a case.
The ESTI Eye Smart Case looks to add a dash of Android to the back of your iPhone. The case comes with a 5-inch FHD AMOLED display for 4.7-inch iPhones. If you a Plus model, you get a 5.7-inch FHD AMOLED display instead. Even the iPhone X gets its own version of the case, with lesser bezels all around. There are quite a few fairly wild ideas in here, and it’s a real interesting piece of tech.
For starters, the ESTI Eye Smart Case will allow you to wirelessly charge your iPhone It achieves this through the screen on the back, though we’re still waiting on exact details. There will be two additional sim slots, which add up or a total of three sim slots. It’s also going to feature a 2800mAh battery for good measure. Even an IR blaster got baked in, allowing you to control all your electronic appliances from your iPhone.
As for the internals, we’ve got the MediaTek P20 processor, which features 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 2.3 GHz and another 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 1.6 GHz. Paired with that, we’ve got a Mali T-880 MP2 GPU at 900MHz, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. There’s even a microSD card slot, allowing you to add up to 256GB of external storage. Perhaps the crowning achievement however is the addition of the headphone jack (and dedicated DAC!) that Apple unceremoniously dumped.
For software we’ve got Android 7.0.1 Nougat, and ESTI’s promised updates for a year. There are also a slew of other nifty software features like NFC, USB-C support and the already mentioned wireless charging. It’s clear that ESTI has put a lot of thought into this case. Even the size of the case isn’t overwhelmingly massive like one would expect it to be.
Of course, there are some issues when you pull off something like this. For instance, the case, while not too large, is still going to make your device bulkier than before. On top of that, it’s also arguable that having another display on the rear of your phone makes for a more fragile device. If none of that matters to you, the Eye starts $135 on their IndieGoGo for the non-cellular model and $159 for the fully 4G capable model. It comes in black and white, and fits pretty much every iPhone since the iPhone 6 and 6S.
The campaign has done very well with over $750,000 of pre-orders already raised: https://edd815.kckb.st
